"At the August election in 1857, the people of Leon county elected me to the Legislature over a most estimable man and old Texas veteran, Captain John P. Border....in 1859, I was again a candidate for Representative, from Leon, being solicited in a public call, over the signatures of some fifteen leading citizens of the county. After having declared myself a candidate in response to this call, General W.B. Middleton announced as a candidate for the place. After the announcement of Middleton, all but about three of my solicitors appeared and desired me to release them from the obligation imposed upon them by their call to vote for me, as Middleton was their especial friend, and they desired to support him.
