Journals of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, 1836–1845

1. Congressional Regular Sessions did not have a universal start date, but were set by specific Acts, Resolutions, or Proclamations. Session start dates (of Regular Sessions) as set by law are linked when available.
2. The Secret Journals of the Senate of the Republic of Texas convey the proceedings of the Senate when in closed session due to the confidential nature of the subject being considered. Secret or closed sessions and journals were allowed by the Constitution of 1836 (Article I, Sec. 17) and the Rules of the Senate, which were the same as those used in the 1836 Constitutional Convention (50th Rule). The Secret Journals were edited by Ernest William Winkler, State Librarian, and published as an appendix to the First Biennial Report of the Texas Library and Historical Commission (1911).
3. Streeter entry 566 states that the 7th Congress Regular Session assembled December 7 and adjourned sine die on January 16, 1843. Members of Texas Congress states that the session started December 5 and adjourned sine die on January 16, 1843. The start date set by law was the first Monday in December. Perpetual calendar shows December 5 as the first Monday in December 1842.
4. The House of the Seventh Congress Called Session was unable to pass a sine die resolution and they met up until the date set by law for the regular session to begin. Therefore, the journal entries for the regular session begin on page 37 of the journal with no indication of a break between the called and the regular session.
5. The Senate of the Seventh Congress Called Session was unable to pass a sine die resolution and they met up until the date set by law for the regular session to begin. Therefore, the journal entries for the regular session begin on page 11 of the journal with no indication of a break between the called and the regular session.
6. Various lists have the first day of the 3rd Regular Session as November 6--House and Senate journals state November 5 and date set in law was first Monday in November. Perpetual calendar shows November 5 as the first Monday in November 1838.
7. Session start date was set by presidential proclamation (cited on first page of Senate journal). Proclamation has not been located.
