Military Service Notes

  • Confederate States Army, Private, Iberia Grays. Obituary, Patrick Henry Golden, "P.H. Golden Dead: He Was Prominent in Labor Circles and a Confederate Veteran," 2/24/1898, p. 12. Born in New Orleans. "During the second term of Gov. James S. Hogg's administration Mr. Golden was elected a state representative. He resigned this position just before the close of the term and became street superintendent of this city." Dallas Morning News.
  • "His father, a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, was killed at the battle of Gettysburg, and an obituary for Harry Golden three decades later stated that, as a teenager, Harry enlisted in the 'Iberia Grays' in 1863 and served for the remainder of the war. There are no records of any Confederate unit known as the 'Iberia Grays'; perhaps the unit in question was the Iberville Greys, but there is no record of Golden serving in that unit or any other, so his Confederate record remains something of a mystery." Handbook of Texas Online.
