"William Joseph," 5/13/1936, p. 3. "[In 1881] He disembarked at Galveston, went to Hallettsville where he worked with an uncle, then moved to Hempstead, while yet a very young man. There he worked on the weekly newspaper; which he later came to manage. He gained the esteem of his fellow townsmen and was elected to the legislature. He fought the populist efforts of the day, although truly devoted to progressive principles. At Austin he gained a deep insight into problems of state government, and broadened his field of interests in many directions."
