"In 1873 he was elected county and district clerk of Chambers county, which office he held until 1878, when he resigned to accept the appointment of county judge . . . elected to the legislature in 1886, after the Sabine Pass storm, and during that session he especially distinguished himself by securing the passage of a relief bill for the storm sufferers of Jefferson county."
