"After graduating from Temple Business College he became a major in the cavalry during World War I and served with the 128th and 2nd Cavalry Brigades. Afterwards, and before World War II, he had a successful career as director of public relations for Texas Power and Light Company in Dallas . . . In 1942, he reentered the army as captain and served as provost marshal at Camp Hulen before being assigned to Fort Bliss in 1943 as director of security and provost marshal.
